Biography
Maia-Joyce Smyl is a 13-year-old competitive dancer and aerial arts performer from Tampa, Florida. Maia-Joyce has been inspired by the art and creativity of dance since the age of 4. Mesmerized by the art of performing, she began her competitive dance journey at 5 years old and her aerial arts journey at 7 years old. Since then, she has been awarded numerous Top 3 placings in the advanced category for both dance and aerial arts.
Maia-Joyce has trained in Ballet, Ballroom, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Jazz, Jazz Funk, Lyrical, and Tap. She has had the honor of being able to learn from many educators including Michael Rooney, Marguerite Derricks, Rhonda Miller, Marinda Davis, and many others. She is the 2022 Junior Dancer of the Year for Tremaine Dance Conventions, and has assisted Saleemah E. Knight, Brian Nicholson, Christina Grady, Keri LaGrand, Tiffany Maher, Meghan Sanett, Tony Bellissimo, Emily Zachary, Derrick Schrader, and Laurie Johnson.
Maia-Joyce has been awarded Top 3 placements and has won various special awards for both Silks and Lyra (Hoop). She is the 2022 National Silks Champion and the 2023 National Lyra Champion for Aerialympics. She is also trained in Acro(Tumbling) and Contortion.
Maia-Joyce is very committed to her craft, and she hopes to continue pursuing it. She attends conventions, completions, and intensives to sharpen her skills. In the immediate future she would like to begin booking commercials, print jobs, acting roles, and modeling. In the hopes of gaining industry experience and building my portfolio. Her biggest dream would be to perform in a cirque du soleil and be a part of a dance themed movie as well as performing on Broadway. She is always excited for a new opportunity and is always willing to take a leap of faith in something new. She has been described as a delightful ball of energy and that has inspired her to let that energy be shared with the world. Her favorite quote is “Can’t is not a word it is a contraction in the English dictionary, and can and not are 2 words that were never meant to be put together.”
